Find the right coffee machine

There are many ways to brew a good cup of coffee – from simple capsule and pod machines to fully automatic machines and classic espresso machines that require more skill. Here, we go through the most common options, with the pros and cons of each, so that you can find the solution that best suits you and your everyday life.

Manual espresso machine

A manual espresso machine is the obvious choice for those who love the craft behind a perfect espresso. You control the entire process: grinding, dosing, tamping, and extraction time. With the right technique, you can achieve café quality at home.

The brew group and metal portafilters provide stable temperatures and first-class flavor. Our machines feature detachable portafilters that are filled with freshly ground coffee from your separate grinder. Tamp the coffee with a tamper, attach the portafilter, and start the brewing process

  • Disadvantages

    • Requires time and patience – not ideal for those who want coffee at the touch of a button.
    • Learning curve – it takes time to learn the technique behind a good espresso.
    • More steps in the process – you are personally responsible for grinding, dosing, and cleaning.
    • Larger initial investment – often a higher price, especially if you also need a separate grinder.

Fully automatic machine

Maximum convenience, minimum effort. Fully automatic espresso machines do all the work for you – grinding, dosing, brewing, and frothing the milk at the touch of a button. Perfect for those who want to enjoy café-quality coffee at home without worrying about the technology.

Most fully automatic machines are best suited for larger cups, such as caffè lungo. Many are made of plastic, which negatively affects temperature stability and the taste of the coffee compared to metal alternatives.

At work, a fully automatic coffee machine can be very practical because it is easy to use. In addition, office-adapted machines are often equipped with features that allow you to choose different drinks, such as milk and chocolate. The wide range of drinks is a welcome addition to the workplace. At Monteriva, you can easily rent an office coffee machine.

There is a wide range of prices for fully automatic machines, and it is not certain that the coffee will taste better because the machine costs more. However, more expensive machines usually offer more features and a more robust build.

  •  Benefits

    • Quick and easy to use
    • Fits perfectly into everyday life or the office
    • Multiple drink options: espresso, cappuccino, latte, etc.
  •  Disadvantages

    • Less control over the brewing process

Pod coffee machines

Pods, or cialde as they are also called, are a smart and convenient brewing system where espresso is portioned into an eco-friendly paper filter. Each pod is individually wrapped in a protective foil package to preserve aroma and freshness. This makes handling simple, clean, and fast – without compromising on quality.

Unlike many capsule systems, pod machines are often built with metal components in the brewing unit. This provides a stable brewing temperature and improves coffee extraction, which in turn leads to a better taste experience. That is why we dare to claim that pods are the simplified brewing system that delivers the best results in the cup.

Advantages

  • Quick and easy – pre-portioned coffee with no mess or measuring.
  • Better taste – consistent extraction thanks to a temperature-stable metal brewing unit.
  • More eco-friendly than capsules – pods consist of paper and coffee, and are fully compostable.
  • Fresh espresso every time – each pod is individually wrapped.
  • Perfect for smaller households or offices – compact and easy to use.

Disadvantages

  • Limited selection – fewer coffee varieties to choose from compared to whole beans.
  • Not for those who like to geek out – less control over dosage and grind size.
  • Single-use packaging – even though the paper is compostable, the outer packaging still requires recycling.

Capsule coffee machines

There is a wide variety of capsule systems on the market; the advantage of capsules is, of course, their simplicity. The reason for the low price of the machine is that you become tied to one capsule supplier. Prices per capsule are generally between SEK 4–5 each. The most popular capsules contain just over 5 grams of coffee, so the price per cup, and especially per kilo, is high.

The appearance of the brewed coffee is perceived by most as good, as it produces crema. To the casual drinker, the flavor experience may seem good. However, for those who appreciate a good espresso, both strength and depth of flavor are lacking. You are welcome to visit us to taste the difference.

Advantages

  • Easy to use
  • Low purchase price for the machine
  • No need for grinding or dosing
  • Compact and space-saving

Disadvantages

  • High price per cup (SEK 4–5 each)
  • You are tied to a specific capsule system
  • Low coffee weight per capsule (approx. 5 g)
  • Lacks the flavor and richness desired by more discerning coffee lovers
