Care, cleaning and troubleshooting of coffee machine

How often do I need to clean my coffee machine?

The cleaning frequency depends on the machine type and how often you use it. Generally, we recommend daily rinsing of the milk system and brewing unit (if removable), weekly cleaning of the drip tray and bean hopper, as well as monthly or quarterly descaling/deep cleaning with designated agents. Always follow your machine's specific instructions for the best results and longevity.

What type of coffee beans should I use in my fully automatic coffee machine?

For fully automatic machines, we recommend beans that are not roasted too darkly. Avoid overly oily beans (very dark roasted/shiny) as they can clog the grinder over time. To get a full-bodied espresso, it helps to have a higher proportion of Robusta in the coffee blend and a finely adjusted grinder so that the coffee flows more slowly. Experiment to find your favorite among our coffee beans!

What is the difference between a fully automatic and a semi-automatic espresso machine?

A fully automatic machine handles everything from grinding the beans to brewing with the touch of a button. Perfect for convenience. A semi-automatic espresso machine requires more hands-on effort – you grind the beans yourself, tamp the coffee, and manage the milk frothing. This gives you greater control over the brewing process and the opportunity for more craftsmanship, but also requires more knowledge.

My coffee machine isn't brewing any coffee/no water is coming out. What is wrong?

First, check that the water tank is filled and correctly inserted. Also ensure that there is no air in the system; run a rinse cycle or a hot water function to flush it through. If your machine has a filter cartridge, check that it is correctly inserted or does not need to be replaced. If the problem persists, it may be time for descaling or a service.

How often should I descale my coffee machine?

The frequency of descaling depends on the water hardness in your area and how often you use the machine. Generally, descaling is recommended every 1-3 months. Modern machines often indicate when it is time. Always use the machine's recommended descaling agent to avoid damage.

Why does my coffee taste bitter/sour?

  • Bitter coffee: Can be caused by too fine a grind, too high a water temperature, too long an extraction time, or the coffee being over-roasted. Try adjusting the grind to be coarser or reducing the brew volume.
  • Sour coffee: Can be caused by too coarse a grind, too low a water temperature, too short an extraction time, too few beans, or the coffee being roasted too light for the chosen brewing method. Try adjusting the grind to be finer or increasing the amount of coffee.
  • General: Cleanliness is essential. A dirty machine can also result in a bad taste.

What is included in a service agreement for coffee machines?

A service agreement from Monteriva is tailored to your needs but typically includes regular maintenance, cleaning, preventative measures, and prompt service in case of faults. The goal is to ensure optimal performance, longevity, and operational reliability for your coffee machine, as well as minimal downtime. Contact us for a customized proposal!

Can I use any type of milk in my coffee machine with a milk system?

Most modern machines work well with different types of milk (cow's milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc.). However, the consistency of the milk foam can vary depending on the fat and protein content. Some plant-based milks are specifically developed to foam well in coffee.
